Lioness
In Miniature
By
Grace M. Murray
Golden sun
blazing
barely illuminates the honey tabby
stalking, a lioness in miniature,
through the buttercups and primroses
of the yellowed lawn.
Her prey
pecks at the ochre seed,
black and gold feathers gleaming,
oblivious to the khaki queen's
amber eyes steeled on her target.
Citron blooms
wave,
jostled by summer breeze
and flicking tail;
all quiet but the golden chirp
of finch caught unawares.
Blurry flash
of
yellow fur--
translucent claw
tears a single stripe
of crimson against lemon breast.
The honey
lioness
has earned her repose.
